Reflections on 2024

As the year draws to a close, I’ve been thinking about Soren Kierkegaard’s famous quote: “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” It’s a simple truth, but it perfectly captures how I’ve been feeling lately. Reflecting on this years learnings while still moving towards what’s ahead.

The year has been full of lessons, but three stand out as the most impactful for me: the importance of keeping a beginner’s mindset, the power of Attunement, and the art of creating the right conditions to let life unfold. These continue to shape not just my personal growth, but also how I approach my work and relationships.

1. The Beginner’s Mindset

One of the most freeing shifts for me this year was embracing the beginner’s mindset. It’s easy to rest on what we know, but I’ve realised that staying open to learning—even when it’s uncomfortable—opens up so much more. When I allow myself to approach challenges with curiosity instead of certainty, things just seem to flow better. It wasn’t about being right or wrong but about staying curious and letting go of needing to have all the answers. This mindset brought a lovely sense of joy, even in the small moments. It reminded me that growth often comes from letting go of expectations and allowing yourself to be a student again.

When we approach life with a beginner’s perspective, we’re open to possibilities. It’s not about perfection but about being present and willing to explore. This year, that approach brought me closer to people and ideas I might have otherwise passed me by.

2. Attunement Is Everything

If there’s one word that defined my relationships this year, it’s Attunement. Dan Seigel simply defines Attunement as “the focus of attention on the inner world. Interpersonal Attunement is the focusing of kind attention on the internal experience of another”. Whether it’s with others, with myself, or even with the broader world, being tuned in has been a game-changer.

Attunement isn’t just listening—it’s showing up fully, noticing what’s really happening, and responding with care. In my work and personal life, I’ve seen how powerful it is to simply be there. It’s not always about fixing things but about making people feel heard and valued. On a personal level, it’s also been about when I need to push more, and when I need to let go. Staying attuned can sometimes take effort, but that's because it’s worth it. When we’re aligned with ourselves and the people around us, life just works better. It’s like finding the rhythm that keeps everything moving.

3. Creating the Conditions for Life to Unfold

The last big lesson this year has been learning to let go of control and focus on creating the right conditions instead. We so often think success only comes from striving and pushing, but I’m learning more and more that it’s about setting the stage and letting things grow naturally.

This means aligning my daily habits with my bigger values—choosing routines and actions that support the life I want. It also means being okay with not knowing exactly how things will turn out. When I’ve let go of rigid expectations and trusted the process, life has a way of surprising me in the best ways. It’s not about sitting back and waiting for things to happen, though. It’s about doing the work—planting seeds and nurturing them—while staying open to whatever comes next. This shift has brought a sense of ease and clarity that I didn’t know I needed.

Looking Forward

As we step into a new year, these lessons will guide me forward. Staying curious, staying tuned in, and focusing on creating the right environment—these aren’t just ideas; they’re practices I want to carry with me.

Kierkegaard’s words remind me that while understanding often comes later, the real magic happens when we live in the moment and take steps toward what we want. I’m curious—what lessons stood out for you this year? I’d love to hear what’s been resonating for you as you reflect on your journey.

If any of this speaks to where you are right now and you’re ready to explore how these ideas can create real change in your life, let’s talk. Through my mentoring and coaching, I help people uncover clarity, build alignment, and step into the life they truly want. Reach out if you’re curious—I’d love to start a conversation.
